Chapter Thirty-Six

The doors clatter loudly against the wall. Special Agent Fury strides into the church, flanked by half a dozen others I recognize from the candy factory. He starts making his way up the aisle even as more of them pour in behind him.

The priest snatches the helmet up from the pew. As he settles it on his head he shoots me a cold glance, like their arrival is somehow my doing. I open my mouth to deny it, then stop. The truth is it kinda is my fault they’re here. I may not have intended it, but I can’t say as I made much of an attempt to cover my tracks either. It would have been all too easy for them to follow me.

I tell myself there’ll be time for apologies later; we have other things to worry about now. Furies are still spilling through the door, like there might be no end to them. I watch as they hurry down the sides of the church, up onto the altar. I brace myself, waiting for the ember to spark, for that cold rush of anger that will sharpen my senses, stripping me of the fear, but it never comes. Instead I feel that prickling sensation inside my head again, and then my limbs grow suddenly heavy, as though someone has hollowed them out, filled them with concrete. The furies continue to pour into the church, taking up positions all around us, but I find myself unable to even raise a hand from my side. Beside me the priest seems to be suffering from the same affliction. He stands stock-still, the staff held low, forgotten.

Once they have us surrounded there’s a pause and then they start to advance, making their way down from the altar, slipping into the spaces between the pews. I wait, lead-limbed and slack-jawed, powerless to do anything other than gawp at their approach. Occasional lightning flickers through the breach in the roof, and now and then I see one of them flinch from it, but it’s nowhere near enough to hold them back. It will be hours yet before the sun rises. This time I can’t rely on daylight to save me.

FBI-fury continues to make his way up the aisle towards me. I search his face for some clue as to what happens next. He stares at me with that same blue-flame intensity I got back in the candy factory. It’s enough to send a shiver down my spine, but otherwise it does little to inform me of his intentions. When he gets within a few yards of me he stops, straightens his shoulders, clasps one hand over the other, like he’s waiting for something to happen.

There’s pause and then a disturbance from the back of the church as someone enters, starts moving through the crowd towards us. Whoever it is the furies part before them, except in a way that isn’t parting at all, but more like drawing together. Miss Kimble once brought a magnet
